What Is Shirodhara? The Therapy That Quietens an Overloaded Mind

The therapy in one paragraph
Shirodhara is the pouring of warm medicated oil, milk or buttermilk in an unbroken stream over the forehead from a suspended vessel. The stream oscillates gently across the Ajna region for 30 to 45 minutes while the head and neck are supported.
Why the effect is so pronounced
Constant, rhythmic, warm pressure over the forehead provides a single unchanging sensory input. The nervous system, which is normally scanning for change, settles into a parasympathetic state. Patients describe it as being awake but completely still — a state most people with chronic stress have not experienced for years.
From the Ayurvedic view, the therapy pacifies Vata and Pitta in the head, nourishes Majja Dhatu, and restores the natural rhythm of Prana Vata that governs the mind.
Conditions where it helps most
Shirodhara is prescribed both as a standalone therapy and as part of a Panchkarma programme.
What to expect practically
Wear clothes you don't mind getting oil on. Plan a quiet evening afterwards — no gym, no cold wind, minimal screens. A course of 7 to 14 consecutive days is standard for chronic conditions; a single session is still deeply restorative but the change in sleep pattern builds over days.
