About Nasya
Ayurveda calls the nose the gateway to the head — Nasa hi Shirso Dwaram. Nasya delivers medicated oils, juices or fine powders through the nasal passage to act directly on the structures of the head, sinuses and mind.
It is one of the five principal Panchkarma procedures and is exceptionally effective for chronic sinusitis, migraine, cervical spondylosis, hair fall, allergic rhinitis and mental fog.
The procedure is always preceded by localised facial massage and steam so the channels are open, and the oil — commonly Anu taila or Shadbindu taila — is chosen according to your presentation.
Procedure
- 01
Face and neck massage
Gentle oil massage of the face, forehead and neck to relax the muscles.
- 02
Localised steam
Mild steam is applied to the face to loosen secretions and open the passages.
- 03
Instillation
You lie supine with the head tilted back; measured drops of warm medicated oil are placed in each nostril.
- 04
Absorption
You inhale gently and rest for a few minutes as the medicine is absorbed.
- 05
Post-care
Warm water gargle, spitting out secretions, and instructions to avoid cold and dust for the day.
