How Basti Works — And Why Ayurveda Calls It Half of All Treatment

Ardha Chikitsa — half of all treatment
The classics give Basti this status because the colon is the primary seat of Vata, and Vata is the force behind every movement — nerve conduction, circulation, elimination, joint motion, even thought. Correct Vata at its source and disorders in distant tissues improve.
The two main types
Anuvasana Basti uses medicated oil. It nourishes, lubricates and is given in Vata-dominant, dry, degenerative conditions. Niruha or Asthapana Basti uses a herbal decoction with honey, salt and paste, and is more cleansing — used to evacuate accumulated Doshas.
Classical schedules alternate them: Yoga Basti over 8 days, Kala Basti over 15 days, Karma Basti over 30 days. The choice depends on your condition and strength.

What the procedure is actually like
The whole procedure takes 30 to 60 minutes including preparation and rest, is performed privately with sterile single-use equipment, and is not painful. Most patients are working the same day. Diet for that day is light, warm and specified in advance.
