About Kati Basti

Kati Basti keeps warm medicated oil in sustained contact with the lumbosacral region inside a specially prepared ring of black gram dough. Because the oil stays warm on the skin for 30 to 40 minutes, penetration is far deeper than with massage alone.

It is one of the most reliably effective Ayurvedic therapies for lumbar spondylosis, disc bulge, sciatica, muscular back pain and the stiffness that comes from long desk hours or driving.

The oil — usually Mahanarayan, Sahacharadi or Dhanwantharam taila — is selected according to whether pain, spasm, degeneration or nerve involvement predominates.

Procedure

  1. 01

    Ring preparation

A ring of black gram dough is shaped and sealed over the lumbar region.

  2. 02

    Oil filling

Warm medicated oil is poured into the ring to the correct depth.

  3. 03

    Temperature maintenance

The oil is replaced as it cools, maintaining warmth for the full duration.

  4. 04

    Removal & massage

The ring is removed and a gentle local massage is performed.

  5. 05

    Local steam

Mild Swedana is applied where indicated, followed by rest.
