About Karna Purana

Karna Purana is the filling of the ear canal with warm medicated oil, retained for a few minutes on each side. Ayurveda considers the ear a seat of Vata, which is why the therapy is so calming.

It relieves ear pain, blocked sensation, tinnitus, jaw tension and neck stiffness, and is a classical part of Dinacharya — the daily routine recommended for healthy people.

It is frequently combined with Shirodhara or Nasya in the management of migraine, vertigo and chronic stress.

Procedure

  1. 01

    Positioning

You lie on one side with the ear facing upward.

  2. 02

    Local massage

The area around the ear, jaw and neck is gently massaged.

  3. 03

    Oil filling

Warm medicated oil is poured into the ear canal and retained for the prescribed time.

  4. 04

    Drainage

You turn to the other side; the oil drains and is wiped away cleanly.

  5. 05

    Repeat

The procedure is repeated on the second ear.

Frequently asked questions

The doctor will examine the eardrum first. It is not performed if there is perforation or active discharge.
